Jail time for drink and drive

ImageThose who are caught drunk or speeding are facing serious charges as off the 1st of July 2006. The Guardia Civil are stepping up their efforts to reduce the high fatality rate among drivers in Spain. The new charges will also include the offence of driving without a licence, especially if one has never been obtained.
Anyone caught driving at 90 kilometres per hour in a built-up area,160 kph on national roads or 190 kph on the autopistas could expect to receive prison sentence.
 
World War 2 bomb found in net

ImageA local fishing boat crew had the shock of their lives when they hauled in their nets Wednesday afternoon to find a German World War 2 bomb. The incident happened some 31 miles out of the San Antonio Cap and the Guardia Civil was contacted about the 64-cm explosive. Experts say the bomb is most likely to be that of the German Junkers JU88 aircraft of which the fuselage was recovered by another fishing boat in 2004 in Javea.
 
Bull breaks neck during fiestas

ImageThe first bull to die during the bull running season has been reported in Javea where a young bull broke its neck when it crashed headlong into metal protection barriers. The vet on duty declared the bull had died from its injuries.
The organisation says that the metal barrier was painted in a light colour, which could be the reason the bull did not see it well. Two years go a similar incident occured involving a yound bull.
 
Red Cross in Javea

ImageThe Red Cross will open a permanent Ambulance in Javea. The Ambulance is part of a 240.000 € health-care deal between the Red Cross and the city of Javea.

It will be available 24 hours a day and can be reached over the telephonenumber 112.

 
Javea´s Arenal School

The Arenal School in Javea seems to continue having problems. So far this one-year old school has received 20 applications for the coming year while there are 50 places available. The head of the school denies that this is a result of last years problems, including leaks and heating problems. According to the councillor of education the school receives bad press because most of the pupils attending are foreigners.
 
Javea ready to party

Javea is preparing the annual fiesta of the "Fogueres de Sant Joan", but this year the they will have to do with € 400.000,- less then last year. Although this significant cut in the budget, the commission in charge says that the programme contains the usual concerts, discos and all of the normal processions.

The location will remain the Plaza de la Constitución, as there were plans to move this years location due to the building activities of the underground car park. Public pressure forced the local authorities to delay these works till after the fiestas.
