Those who are caught drunk or speeding are facing serious charges as off the 1st of July 2006. The Guardia Civil are stepping up their efforts to reduce the high fatality rate among drivers in Spain. The new charges will also include the offence of driving without a licence, especially if one has never been obtained. Anyone caught driving at 90 kilometres per hour in a built-up area,160 kph on national roads or 190 kph on the autopistas could expect to receive prison sentence.
